Mobile Legal Clinic and Community Sensitization on Child Protection in Luampa District Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF), through Paralegal Officer Mr. Cathbert Moono, successfully conducted a Mobile Legal Clinic and community sensitization meeting in Luampa Central Ward, Luampa District, aimed at strengthening community awareness on child neglect and child protection. The engagement provided community members with valuable information on the legal and social consequences of child neglect, children's rights, and the shared responsibility of parents, guardians, and community leaders in ensuring the safety and well-being of every child. Participants were also sensitized on available reporting mechanisms and legal remedies for cases involving child abuse, neglect, and exploitation. In addition, the Mobile Legal Clinic offered legal guidance and support to community members seeking assistance on various child protection concerns, reinforcing PFF’s commitment to promoting access to justice and strengthening community-based child protection systems. Through continued outreach and legal empowerment initiatives, PFF remains dedicated to building safer communities where children are protected, their rights are upheld, and justice is accessible to all. REMEMBERING A MILESTONE OF IMPACT AND HOPE On April 23, 2022, Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF), in partnership with Ubumi Prisons Initiative, was honoured with the prestigious Zenith Global Health Award in recognition of our transformative work in Zambia’s correctional facilities. This award celebrated organisations that have gone beyond the call of duty to provide not only quality healthcare services but also meaningful social support for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. Through the Ubumi Model, inmate volunteers support the sick, elderly, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable inmates through caregiving, food production, cleaning, washing, cooking, and psychosocial support. The model continues to demonstrate that compassion, dignity, and human development can thrive even behind prison walls. As we reflect on this achievement, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Zambia Correctional Service, our cooperating partners, donors, supporters, and the many individuals who have believed in our vision of restoring hope and transforming lives. Today, we celebrate not only an award but a shared commitment to rehabilitation, inclusion, health, and second chances. Together, we continue to advance Human Development Beyond Walls. ZAMBIA’S FIRST LAUREATE OF THE MARIANNE INITIATIVE GEOFFREY MAYAMBA REFLECTING ON AN INSPIRING EXPERIENCE IN BRUSSELS Over the past few days, I had the privilege of participating in the Marianne Initiative 2026 Laureates Programme in Brussels, joining a remarkable group of leaders and human rights advocates from across the world. The programme provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with representatives of European Union institutions, Members of the European Parliament, international development partners, and civil society organisations working to advance human rights, democracy, inclusion, and social justice. The discussions, exchanges, and learning experiences reinforced the importance of global solidarity in addressing challenges facing vulnerable and marginalized communities. I was particularly inspired by the commitment of diverse stakeholders to protecting human dignity, promoting fundamental freedoms, and strengthening democratic values. Beyond the meetings and workshops, the experience allowed us to build meaningful connections, share experiences from our respective countries, and explore opportunities for future collaboration. I return to Paris encouraged, inspired, and more committed than ever to advancing human rights, social justice, and inclusive development within our communities, back. My sincere gratitude to the Marianne Initiative, the French Government, fellow laureates, and all the institutions and organisations that made this enriching experience possible. EVERY STITCH TELLS A STORY OF HOPE, RESILIENCE, AND TRANSFORMATION. The Skills Training Empowerment Project for Inmates (STEP-IN) is changing lives by equipping inmates with certified vocational skills in Tailoring and Design TEVETA Level 3, enabling successful reintegration into society through entrepreneurship and self-reliance. Ms. Matilda Taulo and Ms. Elizabeth Kayawe are living testimonies of the impact that partnerships, compassion, and skills development can create. With support from Tools for Self Reliance and the leadership of Prisoners’ Future Foundation, they are now building independent livelihoods and contributing positively to their communities. We further commend the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, for exercising his prerogative of mercy and giving deserving inmates a renewed chance at life on African Freedom Day. FROM INCARCERATION TO HOPE African Freedom Day 2026 marked more than a national celebration for Andrew Daka, it became the beginning of a new chapter filled with dignity, opportunity, and renewed purpose. After successfully completing Bricklaying and Plastering training under the STEP-IN Programme, Andrew was granted a Presidential Pardon by President Hakainde Hichilema and supported with a startup pack and bicycle through Prisoners’ Future Foundation and Tools For Self Reliance. His journey is a powerful reminder that rehabilitation works when society invests in second chances, skills development, and community reintegration. Through this Press Statement, PFF Acting Executive Director Mr. Mark Musiwa calls upon communities, institutions, and stakeholders to embrace compassion, restoration, and second chances for individuals who may benefit from the Presidential Pardon. True freedom must go beyond political liberation, it must also include access to justice, rehabilitation, peaceful coexistence, and opportunities for successful reintegration into society. As we honour the sacrifices of Africa’s liberation heroes, let us also commit ourselves to promoting peace, responsible citizenship, inclusion, and human dignity for all. “THREE NIGHTS TOO MANY”: HOW LEGAL AID RESTORED FREEDOM AND HOPE FOR A TEACHER IN MANSA Three nights in detention were three nights too many for a secondary school teacher in Mansa whose freedom was restored through timely legal aid and paralegal intervention by Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF). Through community-based legal aid, mediation, and collaboration with justice sector institutions, PFF continues to restore hope, dignity, and freedom to vulnerable individuals across Zambia. MOBILE COURT IN ACTION: JUSTICE DELIVERED AT MUKOBEKO MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON Access to justice continues to take a progressive step forward through the use of Mobile Courts in Zambia with the support of the Embassy of Ireland, Zambia. During a Mobile Court sitting held at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison Chapel in Kabwe, twenty (20) Ethiopian nationals were convicted for unlawful entry and stay in Zambia, contrary to the Immigration and Deportation laws. The Mobile Court comprising a Magistrate Honourable Sebastian Mwenya, Public Prosecutor, Immigration Officers, Legal Aid Board and court support staff, was convened within the correctional facility to ensure timely access to justice for persons in custody. Proceedings were supported by interpretation services to guarantee that all accused persons fully understood the charges and court process, in line with fair trial standards. The accused persons pleaded guilty and, in mitigation, expressed remorse while citing economic hardship as the reason for their migration. The court subsequently fined each individual K3,000 or, in default, sentenced them to two (2) months simple imprisonment. This initiative highlights the critical role of Mobile Courts in: o Reducing case backlog o Enhancing access to justice o Upholding fair trial rights o Strengthening collaboration among justice institutions The sitting also demonstrated strong coordination between the Judiciary, National Prosecution Authority, Department of Immigration, and the Zambia Correctional Service. Following the judgment, deportation procedures are expected to be undertaken in accordance with the law. Mobile Courts are not just about efficiency they are about bringing justice closer to the people. 5th Edition of the Marianne Initiative The Prisoners' Future Foundation (PFF) proudly acknowledges the 5th edition of the Marianne Initiative, bringing together 12 laureates and 12 powerful human rights causes from across the world. This morning’s presentations which included the Presentation of PFF ED Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba highlighted the courage and resilience of these human rights defenders. Operating in often difficult and restrictive environments, their work is both inspiring and a powerful reminder of the urgent need for sustained global action. At a time when human rights are increasingly under threat and those who defend them face growing risks, this initiative stands as a vital platform for solidarity, protection, and international cooperation. As some of the laureates continue their training in Paris until July, and prepare to lend their voices at the upcoming Congress on the fight against the death penalty, PFF reaffirms its commitment to supporting such efforts. The fight against the death penalty remains central to our mission, and we stand in solidarity with all those advocating for justice, dignity, and the right to life. We will continue to support these defenders beyond the training, especially in the field where their work is most critical and impactful. PFF Acting Executive Director Engages Stakeholders in Eswatini The Acting Executive Director of the Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF), Mr. Mark Musiwa, is currently in the Kingdom of Eswatini on an official engagement mission aimed at strengthening partnerships and advancing collaborative efforts in criminal justice reform and social reintegration. During his visit, Mr. Musiwa is holding strategic engagements with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Council of Eswatini Churches in Manzini, Council of Swaziland Churches and Swaziland Peoples Movement. These engagements are focused on fostering cooperation in promoting human rights, supporting rehabilitation initiatives, and advocating for the welfare of individuals in conflict with the law. A key aspect of the mission is to engage stakeholders on the global movement towards the abolition of the death penalty. PFF is encouraging dialogue and reflection on the importance of aligning with abolitionist states, with the hope that Eswatini may, in due course, join the community of nations that have abolished capital punishment in favour of more humane and restorative justice approaches. The visit underscores PFF’s commitment to regional collaboration and knowledge exchange, particularly in addressing shared challenges affecting justice systems and vulnerable populations across Southern Africa. Access to justice should never depend on where someone is held During the Judges’ Forum, Chief Justice Mumba Malila called for the formal integration of mobile courts into Zambia’s judicial system, emphasizing the need to include them in official court calendars and planning processes. Through partnerships with the Embassy of Ireland, Irish Rule of Law International, the Judiciary of Zambia, the Legal Aid Board, and the Zambia Correctional Service, the mobile court initiative has already demonstrated its impact reducing delays, clearing case backlogs, and bringing justice closer to inmates in correctional facilities. The pilot project covered nine correctional facilities across Lusaka, Central, and Copperbelt Provinces, improving access to justice and enabling many inmates to progress through the formal court system. As the initiative moves from pilot to institutionalisation, stakeholders agree that mobile courts are a powerful tool for a more accessible, efficient, and humane justice system in Zambia. Powerful initiative. Mobile courts are a practical and impactful way of bringing justice closer to those who need it most. Reducing prolonged remand periods not only upholds the constitutional right to a timely trial but also helps ease congestion in correctional facilities. Encouraging to see partnerships delivering real results for access to justice in Zambia. 👏⚖️ Thank you Irish Rule of Law International for amplifying our voices. Mobile Courts Strengthening Access to Justice The Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF) Acting Executive Director Mr. Mark Musiwa this afternoon at the Kenneth Kaunda International Conference shared key insights from the Mobile Court Pilot Project during a Judges’ Forum, highlighting progress made in improving access to justice in correctional facilities in Lusaka, Central and Copperbelt Provinces. The initiative, implemented in partnership with the Judiciary of Zambia, Zambia Correctional Service, Legal Aid Board, and the National Prosecution Authority of Zambia, has helped bring court services closer to inmates, reduce case backlogs, and revive long-pending cases. Through strong collaboration and the support of dedicated paralegals, mobile courts are making justice more accessible and efficient. Meanwhile, the Undikumbukire Project (UP) Zambia Executive Director Ms. Sara Larios shared key challenges and lessons learned from the Mobile Court Pilot Project. The discussion highlighted operational and logistical challenges affecting the efficiency of mobile courts, while also emphasizing the importance of collaboration among justice sector institutions such as the Judiciary of Zambia, Zambia Correctional Service, Legal Aid Board, and the National Prosecution Authority of Zambia. Despite these challenges, the Mobile Court initiative continues to play an important role in bringing justice services closer to inmates, reducing case backlogs, and improving access to justice. As Prisoners’ Future Foundation, we remain committed to supporting incarcerated women and their children by promoting dignity, justice, and access to essential services. GLOBAL SOLIDARITY FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER As Laureates of the Marianne Initiative, we were deeply honoured on March 6, 2026 to be invited by Jean Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, to a special event commemorating International Women’s Day. Prisoners' Future Foundation Executive Director Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba says the occasion also featured the prestigious Simone Veil Prize of the French Republic for Gender Equality, which recognises outstanding global efforts to advance gender equality and protect the rights of women and girls. Mr. Mayamba notes it was inspiring to engage with leaders, advocates, and organisations from around the world who are working tirelessly to ensure that rights, justice, and opportunity are not privileges, but realities for all women and girls. As partners in this global movement, we remain grateful to the Marianne Initiative for Human Rights Defenders, and to the many donors and partners who continue to support initiatives that empower women, strengthen justice systems, and uplift vulnerable communities. Together, we move forward with renewed commitment to action, justice, and equality.
